The Causes of Women's Hair Loss

It's normal to lose up to 100 hairs a day, but sometimes hair loss accelerates or hair falls out in patches. Learning the cause of your hair loss can help determine how to treat it.

The first thing you notice might be more hair than usual in your hair brush or clogging the shower drain. Or you see that your part is getting wider or that your hair seems to be thinning overall. If hair loss progresses you may wonder, Am I going bald? What’s causing this? Hair loss in women can occur for many reasons. These include:
  • Female pattern baldness. This can cause thinning hair on the top or sides of the head or at the crown. This tends to get worse over time, but treatment with topical minoxidil (Rogaine) can help prevent more lost hair and spur new hair growth.
  • A stress response called telogen effluvium. If you have a major shock to your physical or emotional health, such as surgery or a death in the family, it’s common to lose more hair than usual two to three months after the event. Telogen effluvium can also result from a sudden change in hormone levels; such a change can be caused, for example, by childbirth. When stress is the cause, hair will grow back over several months.
  • A nutritional deficiency or illness. A serious deficiency in protein, iron, zinc, or other nutrients can make hair fall out. Hair loss in women can also be a symptom of a disorder such as lupus or diabetes.
  • A side effect of certain drugs. Some medications can cause hair loss. Common culprits include lithium, beta-blockers, warfarin, and heparin.
  • Alopecia. This is an autoimmune disease that makes hair fall out in small, round patches. In some cases, it can cause total baldness. A corticosteroid applied to the scalp or injected can help.
  • Fungal scalp infection. Some forms of fungi can infect the scalp, making hair break off at the scalp. This can be treated with oral medication.
  • Overtreating your hair. Braiding your hair tightly, using curling irons or hot rollers, or coloring your hair can make hair brittle and more likely to fall out.
  • Pulling out your hair. This is a mental disorder called trichotillomania; a person afflicted with it will pull out their hair frequently, which can cause patchy bald spots on their scalp or elsewhere on their body.
Preventing Hair Loss in Women
You can prevent some forms of hair loss with a healthy lifestyle and a little TLC for your locks. It also helps to try to reduce stress in your life and eat a nutritionally balanced diet. If a medication is the problem, ask your doctor about switching to something that doesn’t cause hair loss. You can avoid hair loss from fungus by not sharing combs, brushes, or hats with others.
If you want to cover up your scalp while you’re waiting for lost hair to regrow, talk to your stylist about techniques to camouflage sparse areas. Hair weaving and wigs can also come in handy.

When to See a Doctor
Consult your doctor if you suddenly notice hair loss. He or she may take a hair sample for testing if a fungal infection is suspected, or order blood tests if illness or a nutritional deficiency might be at the root of your problem. If you are compulsively pulling out your hair, a doctor can suggest a mental-health professional who specializes in conditions like trichotillomania.
Finding out what’s causing your hair loss is the first step — and it’s also a giant step toward fixing the problem and seeing your hair look healthy again.

Whitening Yellow Teeth

Yellow teeth can detract from your appearance and make you look older than you are. The key to keeping teeth white is to avoid habits that stain and darken them. If that's not possible, whitening products and procedures can help change your smile from dull to dazzling.

We all want a sparkling white smile, but time and what we eat and drink can leave us with dark or yellow teeth instead. This is because teeth absorb the colors of what comes into contact with them — especially red wine, cola, and coffee. Smoking also darkens teeth. And as we age, tooth enamel thins, letting the darker inner layer show through. The good news is that today there’s an array of dental products and procedures that can help restore yellow teeth to their original color.
Before you try to whiten your teeth, consult your dentist. Whitening products and procedures don’t work for everyone. They tend to work well on yellow teeth, but not as well on brownish stains, and may not do much at all for grayish stains. And because bonded teeth and tooth-colored fillings aren’t affected by whiteners, these can become more noticeable in a set of teeth that’s been whitened.

Professional Teeth Whitening
If you want your teeth to be as white as they can be, talk to your dentist about professional treatments, which use more highly concentrated peroxide than over-the-counter products. He or she may suggest whitening at the office or give you a treatment to use at home.
If you opt for in-office whitening, expect your dentist to first protect your gums with a special gel or a rubber shield, then apply a peroxide-based gel; he or she may also use a blue light to enhance the bleaching process. The procedure takes 30 to 60 minutes. Occasionally, your dentist may give you at-home whitening trays to lock in or enhance the whitening achieved in the office.
Some people report sensitive teeth or gum irritation after whitening treatments, but this is usually temporary.

Whitening Yellow Teeth at Home
If you want to whiten teeth that have darkened or yellowed, there are several options you can try yourself:
  • Use a whitening toothpaste. The chemicals and abrasives in a whitening toothpaste remove more surface stains than regular toothpaste does; this gives teeth a brighter appearance, though it doesn’t change their color.
  • Try an at-home whitening product. Gels and whitening strips that you apply to your teeth, trays that you fit on your teeth, or whitening rinses may give you the degree of whiteness you’re looking for. These contain peroxide, which bleaches tooth enamel, removing surface stains and those that are deeper. Gels, strips, and trays are typically used for two weeks, and the results last for about four months. Rinses take longer to be effective because they’re in your contact with your teeth for just a few minutes a day.
Keeping Teeth White
You can help keep your teeth white with basic oral hygiene. This means brushing at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and getting your teeth checked and cleaned regularly by your dentist. If you smoke, quitting will help keep your teeth from becoming dingy. And avoiding foods and beverages that stain teeth can keep your smile brighter for longer.
Today, there’s no need to be embarrassed by yellow teeth. With proper oral care and at-home or professional teeth whitening options, you can reclaim your bright, sunny smile.

10 Easy Ways to Get Shiny, Healthy Hair

Don’t you love it when you feel as if your hair looks so good, you might've just stepped out of a shampoo commercial? You imagine yourself stopping traffic as you strut your stuff down the street — wind whipping through your long, glistening tresses. Bad hair days? Never!
Okay, so maybe that scenario is only the stuff of dreams — but shiny, healthy hair can be reality. Learn how to shine with these 10 simple tips from one of Daily Glow's resident hair experts, Tippi Shorter. The best part? None of them require a trip to the salon!

1. Say yes to hair serum.
Shine serums are available that have been specially formulated to give frizzy or unruly hair a sleek sheen. Find some great options at your local drugstore, beauty supply store, or hair salon. These products moisturize your hair with a light concentration of oils or silicone, says Shorter. To apply, “use a pea-sized amount to start,” she advises. “Start at the bottom of your hair and work your way up, rubbing it into wet hair with your hands.” It’s important not to use too much serum, because it can weigh hair down, but if you feel you need more moisture, go ahead and add a bit more.

2. Use a leave-in conditioner.
Regular conditioners are great, but if you really want to pump up the shine, Shorter recommends adding a leave-in conditioner to your routine. These come in both spray-on and lotion forms. Apply them the same way you do shine serum (see tip No. 1).

3. Wash with cool water.
Beware of hot water! It can dry out your hair and leave it dull. Instead, after shampooing and conditioning, rinse with cool water. “It closes the cuticle,” explains Shorter. “And that allows light to reflect off the hair, producing lots of shine.”

4. Be smart about blow-drying.
As you’re blow-drying your hair, direct the dryer's nozzle down the hair shafts as you hold each section of hair with a round brush. Finish by pressing the “cool” button on your hair dryer — the cool air produces a reflective effect similar to that of a cool-water rinse after shampooing.

5. Spray on the shine.
When your hair is dry, finish your look with a spray-on shine product. Shorter recommends spray mists made by Ojon and Pantene. Whether it comes in a pump bottle or aerosol can, a shine spray can be misted onto dry hair — no matter what texture it is — to give it an extra glistening effect.

6. Switch to a silicone flatiron.
A flatiron can help straighten hair, which usually looks shinier than wavy hair. But avoid overusing a flatiron — all that heat-styling can be drying! Shorter recommends a new type of flatiron made by Bio Ionic, with silicone built into the plates rather than the typical ceramic or metal. “The heated silicone glides right over the hair and straightens it in one pass,” says Shorter. “I’ve found that silicone cuts the straightening time in half, which means less damage.”

7. Get a glossing treatment.
If you really want to get your shine on, consider having a professional glossing treatment. These are often performed after a hair-coloring treatment, but you can get one without the dye job. “It's designed to give you richer hair color with more depth, but it doesn’t actually have any pigment to it,” says Shorter. A glossing is usually temporary, lasting about four to six shampoos, and glossing kits are available at some drugstores, so you can even try it out without hitting the salon.

8. Hydrate your body.
Drinking plenty of water will ensure that your hair is properly moisturized from the inside out. About eight glasses a day is ideal. Keep a bottle by your side and sip from it often!

9. Eat nutritious foods.
Shorter recommends getting your daily recommended allowances of vitamins A and E for shiny, healthy hair. Also, be sure you’re eating plenty of protein, which promotes hair growth. “Eggs and nuts are excellent sources of protein,” Shorter says.

10. Avoid harsh chemicals.
Shiny hair is healthy hair — so don’t abuse it! Limit your hair’s exposure to harsh chemicals, like the chlorine in pools, and lye-based hair-relaxing creams. Use heat-styling as infrequently as you can get away with, and avoid products that contain alcohol, which can dry out your hair and strip its shine.
